I finished this bad boy yesterday and The Boodles loves his new blanket. It was really fun to make even though it took months to finish because I kept abandoning it for other projects. Now all the kids have a baby blanket from me.

I am not a very good quilter but that doesn't really matter to me. I love that this could be something my kids keep and show their kids like the blankets my Mother made for me.

Last night we went to Jones Cottage for a Christmas dinner. We had wonderful food and good company. Before we left Janet gave us some candles for our pyramid so we could light it this year. The Joneses gave us this beautiful pyramid from Germany shortly after our marrige.

The kids love watching the nativity run in circles and seeing the patterns the blades make on the ceiling. We sang a few songs together and the kids sang a couple for us. I love family time during the holidays.

Cookie Party

When I was little our next door neighbor, Lois always invited us over for a cookie party at her home. We would bake and decorate sugar cookies and then have lunch.

Lunch was always frozen corn and hot dogs, that was what we always requested. I am sure my mom loved the cookies party just as much as my siblings and I did because she got to stay home by herself.

Lois, a widow was always more of a grandma than a neighbor to our family. We were constantly at her house, getting her mail for a piece of candy, movie nights, craft projects and a lot of visits.

The cookie parties were legendary, we were there for hours, decorating the cookies and eating the decorations.

Last year Michele started a cookie party tradition for our family. We all brought two dozen cookies to trade and have judged and then we decorated sugar cookies. Jane and I had a great time.

We were outside for a few minutes today and the twins found some charcoal leftover from the end of the summer block party. They drew pictures on the driveway and on the street as we went to check the mail. Josh begged me to let him use the charcoal on the walls of his room. Apparently I didn't need to worry because he only wanted to write his name and draw a heart next to it. I told him not so much. He did this instead.

Happy Happy, Joy Joy! I really can't contain myself, I'm so excited to have the fence up!
Elliott and I spent the morning in the yard getting things cleaned up and moving thing back into place. Within minutes Elliott was helping me water the plants, himself and anything that looked remotely dry. He quickly moved on to the compost buckets and things just got messier from there. It was great, I love this yard!

Yesterday I walked over to the coop and saw that all of the chickens were in their little house even though it wasn't dusk yet. They almost never go in their coop unless it is rainy or the kids are heckling them.
I opened up the coop and I felt like I walked in on something I wasn't (as a human) suppose to see. The chickens were all staring at me as if I had just interrupted a meeting of the minds or a scene from Chicken Run were the chickens are interrupted by the the farm hand and just pretend to be stupid chickens. "Nothing to see here, just us chickens!" It was a little strange and a lot creepy.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla Extract
-8+ beans per cup of Vodka
-Sterile glass bottle with tight fitting lid
-Lots of patience

Directions
Split the beans lengthwise, scrape out the caviar (or not if you are lazy like me) and put it all in a sterile bottle/Jar. Add the vodka at one cup per every eight beans, put the lid on and shake what your mamma gave you! Shake it daily-ish for the first week and then whenever you think about it for the next six-ish months. The nitty-gritty for this project can be found on the Vanilla Review.

I used Baron Rothschild Vodka and Bourbon Madagascar vanilla beans, though you can use any number of combinations between the two. I just purchased some Tahitian beans and I am headed back to the State liquor Store for some more Vodka. See you there!

Boodles in the Park

The Boodles and I played in the park yesterday while Josh was at a Birthday party under a pavilion near by. He played so nicely, I don't think we have ever been to a park alone before. I'm not sure why that would be. I was surprised by his hand eye coordination as he went across the ladder bridges. He is so sweet as he concentrated.

I made a few citronella candles today to combat the mosquito issue that plagues us nightly on the deck. I don't really know what I am doing, so I hope the online tutorial that I used for this project doesn't lead me astray. I was really surprised how easy it was to make candles. It seems like the many times that I have tried in my early teens to make candles (without my parents knowledge) it always went horribly wrong. I'm pretty sure that was how the orange wax stain on the blue carpet leading from the house to my garage bedroom got there.
Now there are these great little bags that act as a double boiler so the clean up is minimal. Anyway I am excited to see if these bad boys work!

We went to American Stone a few days ago to pick up a few flagstones that we needed for the yard. The twins do not like running errands, so I had to be sneaky sneaky to get them excited about this trip. I told the twins that this place had a huge collection of rocks and if they can listen they would get to pick out a few for their own collections.
Josh and Jane have been collecting rocks for the past six months. Mostly they each have a large assortment of gravel and random rocks that I would love to chuck. There are a few interesting ones too, plus it's really fun to see them get so excited and curious about anything nature related.
I just finished my flagstone project and I love that I ended up with a place to plant some moss after all!

Graveyard

For some reason I have found myself in a graveyard three different times in the last two weeks. The kids and I visited the Provo City cemetery a few times, once with Grandpa Holmes and once coming home from taking Coco to the groomers. The kids and I wandered through the grave stones looking at the names and dates and wondering about the people who had died. Josh sounded out the names and Jane put a little clover flower on about fifty headstones. It was really peaceful making our way through the graveyard and the kids were surprisingly respectful of the graves and that we were in a sacred place. We had a few interesting conversations as we walked, and I am always surprised how much the twins understand. We met Grandpa in the graveyard while he was waiting to get his car fixed and he told the kids stories about the people buried there (all made up) and stories about his childhood.
I love getting to spend time with my Dad and I really love to hear his stories. The ones he makes up are always really good but my favorite are the stories about his childhood. My dad is really fascinating, he lived all over the country as a child and his stories about his childhood are from a different time.

Gilgal Sculpture Garden

We had the good fortune to visit Gilgal Sculpture Garden tonight with some friends in SLC. The park is located at 749 East 500 South in Salt Lake City. We only had a few minutes to take in the park's curiosities but I am so glad we had a chance to stop by. I am still not sure what to file the "Joseph Smith as a Sphinx" thingy under but it is amazing to behold.

I am sure there was much more to discover in this small garden but we will have to make a return trip to take it all in.

We went to see Annie Jr at the Covey Center yesterday. Hannah played one of the Annies (there were three Annies) and one of the orphans and she did an amazing job. She had to act, dance and sing, triple threat people!
The twins were so excited to see their cousin on stage since they have been hearing about the rehearsals for months now. Josh was really excited that his desk chair ended up in the play because Aunt Michele was in charge of props.

Kgördee made dinner tonight, but he didn't just make dinner, he made freakin' chicken cordon bleu. It was perfect, I mean Perf- diddly -erf!!! The crust was crispy and light, the chicken was juicy and tender and the prosciutto and gruyere were working their mojo inside it all. Not only did he make dinner but while he made this devine meal he also gave me some quiet time.
My favorite part of our dinner conversation was Kgörd trying to explain to Jane that she should just try a bite of the Chicken so she can experience all of the wonderful flavors together. The twins are at a stage of crustiness when it comes to meal times and unfamiliar foods so watching K try to coax the kids into trying something new was pretty awesome. Dinner and a show! I love Kgördee, hands down favorite Husband!

Jane was very busy this evening while I made dinner. She was throwing up some street art in the pantry on a chalkboard I painted in there about a year ago. I'm not sure how many people were lured in by the "random chalkboard" fad that's over run the blogo'sphere but I sure was. I love the concept of chalkboards in various locals around one's house. How handy is it to be able to organize your schedule with the screech of the chalk or write a menu that (in my case) will look better than what ends up on the dinner table. Let us be honest, I NEVER use it, I want to but it just doesn't happen.

So whatever my reasoning for adding this little number to the pantry wall, I am really glad it is there. Jane was so excited to show me what she wrote and the picture of her and I standing next to each other that she drew. She must have adding the little girl in bed dreaming later, so I'll need to ask her about that tomorrow. All of the little scribbles are Elliott's contribution to the project. This is one of my favorite things about being a mom, I love my children's expressions of their world.

PS Least you think things are a little too precious around here, Elliott just signed in his sleep while holding on to my finger and then gave a sleepy "Mommy". In other news, I spent a good deal of time cleaning up dog poop (and pee) from the carpet after Kgördee and Jane had already walked through it.

We went to Dinner at my Parents house on Sunday night. It was perfect, we had a fall apart roast, it was just as I remember it. After dinner we heard a few family stories and I learned about my great uncle Fussy for the first time. The kids loved that, now Josh likes to tell anyone who will listen about Uncle Fussy.
Ell and Isabella were very sweet together as everyone talked, I love it when they hug.

Date Night

Jane and I went on a date last night, just the Ladies! We went to see a rousing production of Thoroughly Modern Millie (Jr) at Dixon Middle School. Then we took a little refreshment at Spoon It Up (yummy frozen yogurt) and then ended the evening with a quick trip to Michaels.

During the play Jane sat on my lap so she could see Over everyone's heads
and we enjoyed a few Jawbracker candies while Mille and Miss Dorothy Brown (from California) belted it out on stage. Jane was thrilled with the musical, her favorite parts were" the funny parts, and all the parts".

At Spoon It Up, Jane wanted to eat there so we could "have a chat". She likes to hear stories about when I was a little girl, she especially wants to know about the sad ones and the silly ones.

At Micheal's Jane picked out a little set of different color seed beads on string. She is really excited about the pink ones and very giving with the one she doesn't like. She let me know that I can have the green one because she doesn't like that color.

I can't wait for our next date!

Some of the Holmes Ladies and I had a little girls trip to the Big Apple last weekend. So naturally Purl SoHo was our first retail stop. I have visited the Purl's blog for years, so it was really fun to visit their shop after years of drooling over their wares. The store was very small but full of yummy yarns and hard to find fabric collections. They also carry really great embrodiery kits and some very fancy trims.

I ended up with some really sweet fabric for a quilt for Boodles and for Hose. I also scored some vintage inspired fabric for some craftiness.

So I guess I never finished our Panama trip posts, life once again got in the way and then the holidays hit. I blame the dollhouse, but that's for another post.

Hi Camille,

I'm assuming you can get email down yonder, so I thought I'd share a few funnies from our day with Jane, Josh, and Elliott.

First I have to say that I'd be happy to adopt Elliott any time. He is a sweetheart and was absolutely great this weekend. Happy, easy-going, cute and cuddly. He and Andrew got along great. I think there were exactly two times the entire time that they each thought they needed the same thing, and that was over a ball and the fire truck. May I suggest getting him a ride on toy for Christmas or sooner. He really likes Andrew's. He also really likes our dog :) Just saying.

Now for the funnies.

This afternoon Jane was complaining that Hannah had gone to her room and didn't want to play with her anymore. After a few minutes of listening to Jane's complaints, Josh turned to her and in a very exasperated Camille imitation said, "If you'd just quit heckling her, she might want to play with you again!"

Later I was getting ready to make chocolate chip cookies and trying to use this as incentive to get the kids to eat their carrots. I told Jane that I made pretty darn good cookies and I knew she was going to want one. She replied, "My Mom's cookies are better. She makes the bestest cookies."

Five year-olds are pretty funny. Jane is doing great; Josh is having a hard time, but if anyone can coax him out of it, Danna can. I hope all is well with you two. Have a great time and don't worry about home. You'll be back soon enough, and we all know how rare and precious couple time is. So, enjoy!

I can remember her helping me add fringe to the snowman's scarf and one of the other moms commenting on how fancy my mom was. I made these little people for Josh for Christmas to go with the puppet theater he got. It is so much fun to make puppets. I'm not sure how many YouTube videos I watched on puppet making but they were all fascinating.

Josh and Jane have been putting on puppet shows for anyone who will sit still. Mostly the shows consist of one puppet giving a long winded explanation of the performance that will never take place. After such a long introduction naturally the puppeteer has a much better show in mind that needs another explanation.
