:: a cry for help ::

Every few months I have to bribe book recommendations out of all I encounter for my Book Club. This is always a difficult thing to do because we can't read just any book, because our Book Club is organized through the Church we need fairly "clean" books to read and review. They don't have to be PG or G rated books but maybe on the PG-13 level.

I will read books that I think would be great for book club but often times I have to nix them because they are a bit too violent or have too much sex in them (Mom, please don't be too scandalized).

Anyway, I am throwing myself at your feet, please in the name of all that is holy throw me a bone and give me some recommendations for Book Club. Just to give you an idea here are a few of the books we have read in the last year or so.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows By JKR
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin
The Secret life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
A Long way from Chicago by Richard Peck

Here are a the few recommendations I have thus far, please help me add to them.

The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards
The Friday night Knitters club by Kate Jacobs
The Storyteller's Daughter by Cameron Dokey

What about LM Montgomery's books I have really like all that I've read so far, and she has written alot of books.
Oh and I heard that Michele Holmes has a pretty good book out right now.
Shannon Hale's Princess Academy (ask Miss Kitti she's read it I haven't)
the one you recommended to me Dragon Slippers.
And while I haven't read these I just picked up Ella Enchanted and A Wrinkle in Time.

Our ward did Left To Tell (http://www.lefttotell.com/) and I loved it. She is definitely not the best writer in the world, but her story is incredible and it's about faith and other gospel topics. It's a pretty fast book to read too.

"Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons" -fiction, great for women who acknowledge that life isn't all roses all the time

"Five Finger Discount" -autobiographical, life growing up in Jersey

"Into the Wild" just bleep out the f-bombs.

I really liked Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. He also wrote Angle of Repose, but I haven't read that one.
Have you read the Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver? That's really interesting.

OK, books we have read in our ward book club that I have liked:
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Persuasion
A Thousand Splendid Suns
Water for Elephants
A Circle of Quiet (L'Engle)
Reading Lolita in Tehran

Books that are on our suggestion list for future months:
Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science
Everything Is Illuminated
The Time Traveler's Wife
I'm Proud of You: Life Lessons from My Friend Fred Rogers

We should start a goodreads page for LDS book group suggestions. I know what you mean about not wanting to suggest something that someone else might be offended by . . . it is tricky indeed.

Our church book club book this month, my choice, is For One More Day by Mitch Albom. Absolutely one of my all time fav books, and it's sold at Deseret Book so totally safe for a church book club (that's how we do our guidelines)
